Another 1st for Keringet in East Afirca - ISO 22000

The company has once again excelled by upgrading its ISO status from ISO 9001:2000 to ISO 22000:2005 from SGS Kenya becoming the first bottled water company in East Africa to do so. With highly qualified technical staff the company has been able to learna nd harmonise the pre-requisites of ISO 9001:2000 and develop that levels of safatey and management systems further and cover aspects of HACCP to acheive all requirements for such a challenging standard. left]

"Increasing consumer demand for safe food has led many companies to develop both food quality and safety management systems, based on the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP). In 2001, ISO started the development on an auditable standard, which further defines HACCP's role in food safety management systems and culminated in the newly formed ISO 22000. The ISO 22000 standard intends to define the food safety management requirements for companies that need to meet and exceed food safety regulations all over the world. One standard that encompasses all the consumer and market needs. It speeds and simplifies processes without compromising other quality or safety management systems.

ISO 22000 is an international certification standard that defines the requirements of food safety management systems. It can be used by all organisations, in the supply chain - from farmers to food services, to processing, transportation, storage, retail and packaging.

ISO 22000 creates a harmonised safety standard that's accepted the world over. By integrating multiple principals, methodologies and applications, ISO 22000 is easier to understand, apply and recognise. That makes it more efficient and effective as an entry-to-market tool than previous combinations of national standards.

ISO 22000 specifies the requirements for a food safety management system that combines well-recognized key elements to ensure food safety along the food chain, up to the point of final consumption:

  • Provide interactive communication, internationally and across the supply chain.

  • Compliance with the HACCP principles – Hazard Analysis, Identify Critical Control Points (CCP's), Establish Critical Links, Monitor CCP's, Establish Corrective Action, Record Keeping, Verification.

  • Harmonise the voluntary and prerequisite standards.

  • Create a structure that's aligned with ISO 9001:2000.

  • System management.

  • Process control"

The Keringet "Water for Life" Initiative

Partners include:
Capital FM
Blowplast Limited
Gina Din Corporate Communications
Multi Choice
Superbrands
Kenya Red Cross Society

What?
Its an initiative that seeks to aid Kenya Red Cross Society in their response to the Internally Displaced Persons in the country.
Every day you watch TV and the KRCS is requesting for among other things Water. So we came up with a way of helping them achieve this.

Who?
Initially, together with Capital FM, we gave a lorry full of Water. This was only a drop in the ocean.
The initiative is a brain child of Keringet MD - Mr. Chandra Gohill – when all this started, he was in the UK on holiday. He cut short his leave to come and assist.

Why?
The need was big and continues to be big. We could not meet it alone, so we sought partners who shared the interest to see our own displaced at least given a chance to have an easier time in the various areas.
Molo is where we bottle our water – this is where at one point the skirmishes and tension was very high. We would not ignore what was going on and turn a blind eye. We had to do something.
The jerry cans are handy, can hold large amounts, are easy to transport, can be re-used even to fetch more water. Occupy less space to store. All these were things we looked at – to ensure worth for the sponsor as well as the end user.

Partners.
In Swahili, it is said – umoja ni nguvu, utengano ni udhaifu.
We could not do it alone; therefore we sought ways to give other Kenyans a chance to participate, and are still calling on Kenyans to give. The cost is only 250.00 shs per container. That is the cost of two beers, one meal at a fast food, or pocket change to some people.
We therefore are accepting even the least amount. All monies are deposited in the Crown Foods Ltd water for life account at National Bank, and goes towards the purchase of the jerry cans. We in turn take up the jerry cans and fill them with Keringet water, and in turn the Red-Cross is collecting the water from our plant in Molo and transporting to the areas of need.
We thank all our partners For heeding our call.
  • Capital FM – they have given us this opportunity to call on all listeners to join the initiative.
  • Blowplast Limited – they give us the jerry cans at a subsidised rate. At this time when everything is becoming more expensive, it is encouraging to see them give us the heavy duty jerry cans at a no-profit price.
  • Gina Din Corporate Communications – by giving their expertise to manage this initiative, we are confident that even after the situation normalises, we will look for ways to ensure that the initiative continues to reach Kenyans in need.
  • Multi Choice – they gave money, which bought 400 jerry cans for the initiative.
  • Superbrands – so far their contribution has been priceless and continues to be – initially giving money to buy 140 jerry cans, they have also given advertising space, and ideas to grow the initiative.
  • Kenya Red Cross Society – giving logistical support of collecting and distributing the same to all areas of need.

So far?
We have seen so far the initiative give 1000 jerry cans, the partnership will go a long way in assisting people living in camps access clean and safe water.

The initiative comes at a time when low hygienic standards and water shortages have been reported in many IDP camps across the country.

Future?
We intend to continue, working closely with KRCS to ensure that we can aid where we can.
The IDPs are being taken back home, but what about those whose homes were destroyed? Before the government can re-settle them, they will still require our help to lead a semblance of normal lives.
We need more jerry cans – so a call to all listeners –
  • One Mtungi Costs = Kshs. 250.00 Only
  • One Hundred Mtungis = Kshs. 25,000
  • One thousand Mtungis = Kshs. 250,000
We could not do it alone; therefore we sought ways to give other Kenyans a chance to participate, and are still calling on Kenyans to give.
The cost is only 250.00 shs per container. That is the cost of two beers, one meal at a fast food, or pocket change to some people.
  • You may offer to buy as many Mtungis as you wish
  • These you can buy directly from the company – Blowplast Ltd or through us. The contacts for Blow Plast are through Raj Shah on (020) 550832 or raj@blowplastKenya.com Deposit the money directly to the Crown Foods Ltd water for life account at National Bank, Ac. No. National Bank: 010 205 424 1200
  • Or call capital FM and give. By doing so, you
  • Give us the Challenge of Filling them with Keringet water in aid of Red Cross
  • Give the IDPs an equal chance to clean drinking water
  • Reduce chances of disease outbreak
  • Help Red Cross in medical aid. They also use the water to flush their medical equipment, administer medicine and give first aid.
By investing in the people, you are investing in the healing process, and spreading the love that is envisioned in our national anthem – in common bond united, building our nation together. Filling our fellow Kenyans' hearts with thanks giving.

A heart that is thankful – cannot have space for bitterness!

However, we as a contributor to the industry are in support of local tourism and are looking to be involved in the soon to be unveiled drive to revive and promote local tourism.

No comforts have been spared. The holidays were booked through Travel Shoppe, a renowned tours operator in Kenya, and they looked for only the best. After all, Kenya is a major tourism destination in the world, and a favourite to many. So for us to send anyone out of Kenya on holiday, we had to look for that extra that someone will get and have a chance to enjoy other cultures.

At a time when Kenya has been hit with a turbulent political time, Keringet has decided to make good on its promise to the consumers to offer the holidays so that the winners can get a well deserved get away.

The company has enjoyed growth in recent years and is confident that the future holds a promise for the company and the country as a whole for better things to come, if the conflict is resolved quickly.
